By now we all know how good essential oils are for the human body, but did you know that they can also be used for the home? Swap the supermarket cleaners for these natural alternatives which are much better for the environment, and for your overall health.
Fridge and freezer cleaner
Oil: Grapefruit essential oil
When cleaning the fridge or freezer, add a few drops of grapefruit oil to a small bowl to eliminate smells and other strong odours from food.
All purpose cleaner
Oil: Tea tree oil
Combine three drops of lemon oil and three drops of tea tree oil with 1/2 cup warm water to clean almost any surface in your house. Not only will this mixture leave your house smelling so good, but tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant!
Oil: Bergamot/ Lime oil
For an instant bathtub scrub, combine 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup vinegar, and five drops of Bergamot or lime oil and mix well. Apply on the entire surface of the tub with a sponge to remove stains and brighten.
Oil: Lavender oil
To bring a lovely smell into any room of the house, diffuse lavender essential oil for a peaceful and and relaxing ambience. Lavender is a great choice if you’re also suffering from feelings of stress, anxiety, and will help you sleep better.
Freshen up the bins
Oil: Lemon oil/ Tea tree oil
Give your bins a refresh with two drops of lemon and tea tree oil applied on a cotton ball, and put it directly at the bottom of the bin. It will help to mask the odour and detoxify the entire area.
Wash fruit and vegetables
Oil: Lemon oil
Sometimes water just isn’t enough for supermarket fruits and veggies, try this easy method to give them an extra wash. Add two drops of lemon oil to a large bowl of room temperature water, and soak for a few minutes. Pat them dry with a paper towel, then they’re ready to eat.
Clean kitchen smell
Oil: Citrus essential oil
If you’ve been cooking an aromatic meal and your kitchen needs a little TLC, combine a few drops of clove, cinnamon and citrus oil to a bowl of hot water to remove the excess smell. Not only will it freshen up your kitchen, but it can also be used to tidy the bathroom and laundry.
Oil: Lavender oil
In between loads, add 10-20 drops of lavender oil to give your washing machine and much needed detox!
